Director Martin Scorsese has once again proven his quality as one of the best filmmakers in the world. After last spawning Irishman in 2019, Scorsese returned to present a work based on a true story entitled Killers of The Flower Moon.
In this almost 4-hour movie, Scorsese again hooked up several actors who had worked with him. Two big names, namely Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, were again asked to be the central characters in the film which tells the story of the bitter life of the Osage tribe, one of the Indian tribes in Oklahoma, United States in the 1920s.
The story of Killers of The Flower Moon begins with the joy and excitement of the Osage people who discover that the land they live on contains abundant petroleum. This then makes them transformed into wealthy people.
Predictably, this then lured white people to come there and invest. They also competed to taste their wealth by marrying women from the Osage tribe.
Ernest Burkhart (DiCaprio) was one of those people who did not want to waste this opportunity. With the encouragement of his uncle, William 'King' Hale (De Niro) who is a prominent man in Oklahoma and has very good relations with the Osage tribe, Ernest marries an Osage woman named Mollie (Lily Gladstone) who, of course, also has a lot of money.
Unfortunately, Mollie does not realize that behind her marriage to Ernest, there is an evil plan that has been very carefully and systematically arranged by a group of people to eliminate her and the other Osage tribes in order to enjoy the wealth of these unfortunate people themselves.
Although it runs for 3 hours and 26 minutes, Killers of The Flower Moon does not bore the audience at all. All thanks to the strength of the characterizations and the slow but very interesting storyline to follow.
Scorsese's expertise as a director, supported by the acting skills of the players in it, makes the audience feel the bitterness experienced by the Osage tribe who were exploited, manipulated, cheated and used before finally being killed very cruelly by white thugs who were only after their money.
DiCaprio and De Niro's prowess as character actors also succeeded in bringing the audience away, even really feeling very furious about the crimes they committed against the Osage people.
Lily Gladstone's acting in this movie also cannot be ruled out. Her role as an innocent and kind-hearted Osage woman is able to make the audience's hearts so touched, especially when she witnessed her family members die one by one. Moreover, her chemistry with the other actors, especially DiCaprio, is also worthy of two thumbs up.
Killers of The Flower Moon is also made all the more interesting by the simple yet fitting score from musician Robbie Robertson.
Although it doesn't sound grand and dominant, the delta blues music through slide guitar cuts and harmonica screeches that are presented succeeds in making this movie feel so dark and sad without the need for excessive explicit scenes.
Overall, it is no exaggeration to call Killers of The Flower Moon a near-perfect drama. The acting power of DiCaprio, De Niro and a series of other names that are so stunning, supported by a mature plot and visual appearance that is not canned, makes Killers of The Flower Moon worthy of being called one of the best films in 2023.
